Ribble Valley Mayor shows support

Ribble Valley Mayor shows support for Clitheroe Youth project

Members of the Clitheroe Youth Forum Remembrance project attended a civic ceremony on Monday given by the Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Cllr Mrs Lois Rimmer. This was to acknowledge the project’s achievement at having gained a National Lottery Finalists Award. The Mayor told the young members of the group that their project has done great service to the Ribble Valley, and that they should feel proud of their achievement.
The Mayor was given the opportunity to look at the two Books of Remembrance listing the Clitheroe casualties of World War II that had been commissioned by the project. One was in Braille and had been created by Chris Tattershall of Braille IT, an accredited  service that provides free tuition for the visually impaired with branches in Clitheroe, Blackburn, Burnley and Chorley.
The other book is a traditionally styled handwritten Book of Remembrance and Roll of Honour bound in red leather. It has been created by local calligrapher, Norman Kelly, and his design is based on the Roll of Honour that was done in the 1930’s to commemorate the casualties of the First World War.
Both books are to be dedicated at a special service at Clitheroe Parish Church on Monday 13th September at 7.00 p.m. The service will be conducted by the Priest in Charge, Andy Froud, and is open to all who would like to attend.

Presentation Late Stanley Smith Pollard

Monday 9th August Church Service - Presentation Late Stanley Smith Pollard

On Monday 9th August a Church Service and Medal presentation took place at St Mary's Church, Clitheroe which commenced at 2.30pm. This was for a Mrs Kath Brooks and Marjorie Preston (who lives in London) who lost their brother Stanley Smith Pollard who was aged 19 and serving as a coder in the Royal Navy when he was killed in 1945 through enemy action. Stanley Smith Pollard is buried in Norway. The family have never had any medals and through our project we have recently been able to obtain these from the MOD. This service and presentation was open to members of the public. The service was kindly conducted by the Reverend Dr Peter Shepherd who we wish to thank for his kind help on this important occasion. His guidance and assistance at every stage of this process was invaluble. The service concluded at 3.15pm.  Refreshments were then taken at the Grand.
