Additional Info: Corporal Merchant joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps shortly after the outbreak of the war and he was serving overseas for more than two years prior to being killed. As a boy Wilfred Merchant attended Whalley School and before joining the services he was employed at a hotel in Regent Street, London. Son of Samuel and Sarah Annie Merchant of Whalley. Mrs Merchant of Coronation Buildings on Tuesday received an offical information that her youngest son, Corporal Wilfred Merchant, has been missing in the Middle east since his last active operation in June 1942. We have an article from the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times dated January 22nd 1943 giving more information. Corporal Wilfred Merchant died in hospital as a result of dysentry while a prisoner of war in Italy. He was reported missing on June 29th 1942. Two brothers serving in the Armed Forces. Private Harold Merchant and is serving as a Military Policeman. Prior to the forces he was an attendant at Calderstones Institution. Private Harry Merchant is serving in the Middle East. Harry was a gardener until he volunteered in September 1939. Both are married.
