Additional info: Son of Thomas and Mary Taylor of Templepatrick, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. May well have been a groom on one of the farms/stables in Chatburn. More information to follow hopefully and confirm this. H.M.S Penelope was a Light Cruiser and came from Anzio having supported the landings and was heading back to Naples to replenish ammunition. The shiip was hit by two torpedoes just after 06.58 35 miles west of Naples off Cape Circe from U410 commanded by Lieutenant Arno Fensky aged 25. Within a few minutes the ship had gone. 418 men lost out of 650. The captain of H.M.S Penelope who was also lost was G D Belben. D.S.C. A.M. R.N.
